Insurance Policy Claim Review
Anyone that has been required read their insurance policy understands the challenge. Policy language is not written with the goal of allowing insurance customers to easily assess and compare their policy coverage with the multitude of others available to them to purchase. In addition to the “legalese” incorporated in policy language, each state in which these policies are issued requires language drafted by that state to be incorporated in the policy. Lastly, your policy originally states everything that would be covered by the policy, (declarations) then states a long list of items that are not covered in your policy (exclusions), and finally if you as a customer you decide certain items not included in basic coverage you can pay to add those things important to you back into the policy coverage (endorsements). There is no doubt that most insurance customers do not have the time or contract language knowledge to read the policy from cover to cover, and even if you did, there isn’t anything you can do to modify that language as insurance policies are a contract of Adhesion.
Sentinel Claim Services Inc will complete a full policy review as part of the claims process to ensure that you have the proper coverage for the damage being claimed. If possible, it is better to complete this review BEFORE a claim is filed to make sure that you are not claiming damages on something that is not currently covered and creating future issues for you.
Claim Management and Communication
Your insurance claim has a finite lifespan. Depending on your specific contract language you will normally have about two years to file a claim, get the claim adjusted, get the work completed and receive the claim depreciation withheld by the insurance company pending that work completion. While two years may seem like a long time, you will be shocked at how fast this time can go by if things are not going the way that you wanted them to with the claim. The biggest weapon that the Insurance company has in minimizing their exposure is the ability to delay the claim resolution. If for any reason you get to that claim date expiration it is game over for your claim.
At Sentinel Claim Services Inc, we understand their process, and the reasoning behind the actions that your insurance company may take. The Insurance Policy that you purchased is a legal contract, you have rights under this policy and once you can demonstrate to the Insurance company that you are aware of your rights and coverage owed to you, things can normally move forward in a more timely and legitimate manner. Sentinel Claim Services Inc will make sure that all your duties as an Insured are completed as required, documented through clear, concise, accurate and timely written communication to make sure that the Insurance company has no reason to not fulfill their responsibilities under the contract terms. While Sentinel Claim Services cannot guarantee that the Insurance Company will do what they are supposed to, in the event they breach their contractual responsibilities, we are very knowledgeable about the alternate dispute resolution options (ADR’S) available to you and can also guide you through those options if required.
Damage Repair Completion
One of your duties as the Insured is to mitigate any additional losses from damage that you have incurred. We can oversee your efforts in completing that work, or Sentinel Claim Services Inc can provide you with the names of resources you can hire to assist you in completing those requirements and secure your building from further damage while the claim adjustment process is completed.
You will be able to provide a scope of work to your current contractor relationships so that you can receive an estimate from them for the completion of the work, or Sentinel Claim Services has an extensive list of vendors and subcontractors that can assist you with the supply of materials or completion of these repairs. Sentinel Claim Services receives NO financial compensation and has no financial interest from these referrals and only makes these introductions as an additional method of assisting our customers who may not have these relationships in place or had to secure these types of construction contractors in the past.
You as the Insured have full authority to select whomever you want to complete the repairs and for larger commercial customers you may elect to complete these repairs using your internal staff if they have the required expertise to complete the work.
Claim Finalization and Documentation
Once the work is done and your property has been restored back to its pre-loss condition, there is one more step that has to be taken to finalize the claim process and ensure that you will not have any issues with the future insurability of your property. Your insurance company will have retained a significant portion of your claim award amount to ensure that you will complete the repairs that have been approved. This portion of the claim funds is known as “recoverable depreciation” and you as the insured (with the assistance of Sentinel Claim Services) will be required to provide information and documentation to the insurance company so that they can release this final amount to you, and you can then pay the construction company that completed the work for you.
This work usually has a deadline of time that the work needs to be completed by and provide the Insurance company this documentation. Sentinel Claim Services will help you to gather that required information and submit it to the Insurance company on your behalf and follow up on a regular basis until those claim funds are received.
